Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz jumped to nearly 200 vessels last week, up sharply from the prior two weeks, as operators shift toward an Omani route and "dark" sailing to limit exposure to regional conflict. The increase comes amid an unresolved conflict involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel, and markets are watching whether the strait returns to normal traffic by September 30.

Nearly 200 ships transited the Strait of Hormuz last week, according to data from UK Maritime Trade Operations reported by the New York Post. That is up from 150 ships the week before, and about 40 two weeks earlier, a sharp acceleration in crude oil shipping activity through one of the world's busiest maritime corridors.

Operators are increasingly using an Omani route or "dark" sailing, methods aimed at reducing exposure to the conflict zone. The rise unfolds against the backdrop of an unresolved conflict involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel, which has kept security risks elevated for vessels transiting the region.

Market pricing implies participants view the rise in traffic as a sign of potentially easing tensions, or as a strategic adjustment by operators navigating around geopolitical risk rather than a resolution of it. The use of alternative routes also points to continued caution even as more vessels move through the corridor.

Traders are watching for a verified ceasefire or diplomatic agreements between the parties involved, along with any statements from Iran and Oman, since these could reshape expectations for the strait's traffic. Any new incidents or threats in the strait could just as quickly reverse the current trend. The key marker to watch is whether traffic normalizes by September 30.
