How to Trade Palantir Stock (PLTR): Earnings, Valuation and Position Sizing

Between November 3, 2025 and June 25, 2026, Palantir’s share price fell 48%, from a $207.18 close to $107.27. Over the same stretch its revenue growth sped up every quarter. To trade Palantir stock (PLTR), you buy the shares through a broker, or open a long or short position with a derivative such as a CFD or an option, during Nasdaq hours of 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. New York time. That 48% slide, in a business that kept beating forecasts, is the main thing to understand before you put money on it.

This guide covers the numbers behind PLTR, the case for and against owning it, what moves the price, how it has reacted to its last eight earnings reports, and how to size a trade before the next report on November 2, 2026.

How to trade Palantir stock in five steps

  1. Decide what you want: ownership or a trade. Buying shares suits a holding of months or years. A CFD or an option suits a view of days or weeks, and lets you go short.
  2. Open and fund an account. PLTR is a US listing, so you need a broker or platform with access to Nasdaq stocks or to share CFDs on them.
  3. Check the calendar. Palantir reports four times a year, after the US close. The next report is Monday, November 2, 2026, with the webcast at 5:00 p.m. ET.
  4. Set the exit first. Place a stop-loss where your idea is proven wrong, and accept that an overnight gap can jump straight past it.
  5. Size for PLTR, not for the index. The stock has moved an average of 2.6% a day over the past year and 14.8% the day after earnings. Work out what each figure does to your account before you enter.

Two numbers in that table explain most of the trading behaviour. A beta of 1.6 means PLTR has historically moved about 60% more than the S&P 500. A trailing P/E above 160 means the price already assumes years of fast growth, so any hint that growth is slowing gets punished hard.

Is Palantir a good stock to buy?

That depends on what you pay and how long you can sit through drawdowns. The business numbers and the valuation pull in opposite directions, and the stock has swung between them for two years.

The case for, from the Q2 2026 results filed with the SEC:

  • Revenue of $1.94 billion, up 93% year on year. Growth has risen each quarter for a year: 63% in Q3 2025, 70% in Q4, 85% in Q1 2026, then 93%.
  • US commercial revenue of $764 million, up 149%. This is the segment selling the AIP software to companies, and it is now almost as large as US government revenue ($809 million, up 90%).
  • An adjusted operating margin of 62% and GAAP net income of $1.06 billion for the quarter.
  • Full-year 2026 guidance raised to revenue of $8.150 billion to $8.158 billion, from $7.18 billion to $7.20 billion in February.

The case against is mostly one number. At $192.60, PLTR trades at 101.5 times next year’s expected earnings and about 45 times expected sales. For comparison, Alphabet traded at a forward P/E of 25.5 on the same day. At that price, the market needs Palantir to keep growing near current rates for years. The first half of 2026 shows what happens when investors doubt that: the stock lost a third of its value by June 30, although both reports in that period beat earnings forecasts. Yahoo Finance coverage at the time put the decline down to a valuation reset rather than anything in the business.

Analysts lean positive, with a wide spread. Of 32 analysts polled by S&P Global, the consensus rating is Buy, with an average 12-month target of $206.43 and targets ranging from $80 to $265 (StockAnalysis, October 15, 2026). A gap of more than three times between the lowest and highest target tells you how little agreement there is on what the company is worth.

For a trader, the more useful question is narrower: can you hold a stock that fell 48% in under eight months, then rose 80% from that low by October 20? If the answer is no, size smaller or trade it short-term rather than owning it.

What moves Palantir’s share price

US commercial growth

Government work still pays the bills, but the stock trades on the commercial line. In May 2026, Palantir beat revenue and earnings forecasts, yet US commercial revenue of $595 million came in under the $604 million analysts projected, according to Zacks via Nasdaq. The stock fell 6.9% the next day. In August, US commercial revenue grew 149% and the stock rose 29.5%.

Government contracts and budgets

US government revenue was $809 million in Q2 2026, up 90%, and US customers as a whole made up 81% of the quarter’s sales. That puts the US budget cycle, defence spending and large agency awards close to the share price. For a company this concentrated on one government, contract news and federal spending debates count as company news.

Valuation and interest rates

Stocks priced on profits years away are sensitive to bond yields, because higher rates shrink what those future profits are worth today. With a forward P/E above 100, most of PLTR’s value sits in those distant years. That is why Federal Reserve decisions and inflation data can move it on days with no company news, and why a beta of 1.6 tends to show up on the way down as well as up.

Momentum

PLTR runs in long streaks. It rose 60.3% in Q3 2026 alone, after falling 34.4% in the first half (Yahoo Finance closes). Streaks like that pull in buyers who are following the trend rather than the earnings, and when volatility picks up, they tend to leave at the same time. On October 16, 2026, the stock traded between $203.55 and $184.45 and closed down 7.2%, with no earnings release that day.

Index flows

Since joining the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 in late 2024, PLTR sits inside the funds that track them. Index funds buy and sell it mechanically, and any index or sector selloff drags it along. If you hold an S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100 fund, you already own some Palantir.

How PLTR reacts to earnings

Earnings are where PLTR does most of its moving. Palantir reports after the US close, so the first reaction happens in after-hours trading and the full move shows up the next day.

Report date Next-day open vs prior close Next-day close vs prior close
November 4, 2024 +15.6% +23.5%

August 3, 2026 +15.5% +29.5%

Three patterns stand out. The average next-day move was 14.8% in either direction, more than five times the stock’s ordinary day. The smallest move in eight reports was 6.8%. And a beat on the headline numbers did not guarantee a rise: in November 2025 and May 2026, Palantir topped earnings forecasts and the stock still fell about 7%.

The options market expects something similar this time. Ahead of the November 2 report, options pricing implied a move of about 12.75% by the end of that week, according to Optionslam (around October 20). Analysts expect revenue of about $2.18 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.41, against company guidance of $2.160 billion to $2.164 billion. The Palantir earnings date page tracks the time in other zones, the consensus and what to watch on the call. Ways to trade or invest in Palantir

Method You own the shares? Can go short? Main risk to watch
Shares through a broker Yes Only by borrowing shares Drawdowns like the 48% fall in 2025–26
Index fund or ETF Indirectly No Palantir is a small slice, so the exposure is diluted
Options No (unless exercised) Yes (puts) Premium decays; implied volatility drops after earnings
CFDs No Yes Margin losses, overnight financing, gaps

Shares are the simplest route if you want to hold PLTR for the business. Palantir pays no dividend, so the return is all price change. Many brokers sell fractional shares, which makes position size easy to control.

Options let you define the maximum loss on a long trade, but before earnings you pay a high premium for that. Once the report is out, implied volatility usually collapses, and an option can lose value even if the stock moves the way you expected.

CFDs track the share price without ownership and let you trade both directions with margin. The CFD trading guide covers how they work, and the leverage guide covers what margin does to your losses. If you want to bet against PLTR, short selling vs buying puts compares the two main routes.

Sizing a position in a stock that moves 2.6% a day

Take an illustrative CFD position worth $10,000 in PLTR, opened with $2,000 of margin, held through the August 3, 2026 report.

  • Long: the 29.5% rise the next day adds about $2,950, more than the margin you put up.
  • Short: the same move costs about $2,950. The loss is larger than the $2,000 margin, and the position would have hit a margin call or been closed well before that.
  • A stop placed 5% above entry on the short would not have helped. The stock opened 15.5% higher, so the stop would have filled near the open, three times further away than planned.

Rules that follow from that:

  • Size from the stop and the gap. Decide the most you can lose, then assume earnings can move PLTR 15% to 30% overnight. The risk-reward ratio guide covers the arithmetic.
  • Cut leverage before reports. Margin that is comfortable on a 2% day can disappear on a 25% day.
  • Watch for crowded trades. Short interest is low at 2.6% of float (StockAnalysis), so a short squeeze is less of a risk than it looks. The sharper risk is a fast drop when momentum buyers leave together.
  • Count what you already hold. An S&P 500 or Nasdaq 100 fund already contains PLTR, and AI-themed ETFs may too. Check the holdings.
  • Use a take-profit order. In February 2026 PLTR opened 11.7% higher and closed only 6.8% up. Gains on this stock can shrink within hours.

On the chart, traders watch the October 12 high of $212.94, the June low near $106, and levels where the price paused on the way up. The guides to support and resistance and the RSI indicator explain how to read them. Treat any level as provisional around a report, since a 15% gap leaves it behind.

Palantir stock trading hours

PLTR trades on Nasdaq from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET. Many brokers also offer pre-market trading from 4:00 a.m. and after-hours trading until 8:00 p.m. ET. Palantir’s results arrive after the close, so the first reaction plays out in thin after-hours trading, where spreads are wider and prices jump between orders.

Check the clocks this autumn. Europe moves back an hour on October 25, 2026 and the US on November 1, the day before the report. From November 2, the Nasdaq close of 4:00 p.m. ET is 21:00 UTC.

Trading Palantir with PrimeXBT

PrimeXBT offers CFDs on global shares, including Palantir, and on stock indices, all from one account funded with crypto or fiat. You can go long or short and attach stop-loss and take-profit orders, and the PLTR price chart shows the live quote. Because Palantir sits in the Nasdaq 100 and the S&P 500, its report can also move index positions; the Nasdaq 100 guide and the guide to earnings season and indices cover that side. For the wider calendar, start with the earnings season hub.

Before November 2, write down two prices: where your Palantir trade is wrong, and where a 15% gap would put the stock. If the second number would break your account, the position is too big.
