Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy says he and US President Donald Trump have agreed to meet in New York during next week's UN General Assembly, in what Zelenskiy said could change a lot for efforts to end the 4-1/2-year war with Russia. He also thanked Trump for a Kyiv visit by US envoys and for a new Russia sanctions law.
Zelenskiy said Sunday he had spoken with Trump and the two agreed to meet in New York for talks. He said the meeting could change a lot in the search for a resolution to the 4-1/2-year war with Russia.
The two leaders will be in New York in the coming week for the UN General Assembly. On the X social media platform, Zelenskiy said there is diplomatic momentum behind the effort.
He thanked Trump for this month's visit to Kyiv by US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. According to Reuters: "The peace track is our number-one priority," he said.
Zelenskiy pointed to ideas for de-escalation steps addressing energy security, food security, and the protection of human life, and said Ukraine is working with the American team and ready to take serious steps.
He also thanked Trump for signing into law the Russian sanctions bill championed by the late US Senator Lindsey Graham.
