XRP Ledger developers have rolled out the ninth Devnet release of Smart Escrow, moving the programmable-escrow feature closer to launch. The update migrates the WebAssembly virtual machine integration from C++ to Rust, a change RippleX engineer Mayukha Vadari says lifted performance by 30%-50% per host function call.
Developers behind the XRP Ledger just shipped the ninth release of the Smart Escrow Devnet, pushing the programmable-escrow feature nearer to a full launch. Mayukha Vadari, a senior software engineer at RippleX and one of the authors of the Smart Escrows proposal, called it a big step toward launch, adding that the team is still reviewing and testing the framework before release.
According to U.Today: "Programmability on the XRPL keeps moving"
Rust migration drives the performance gain
The ninth release carries a full migration of the WebAssembly virtual machine integration from C++ to Rust. Vadari said the new architecture creates a single point of entry for gas accounting, error handling, and checks.
That change alone improved performance by 30%-50% for every host function call, she said. The developers also renamed host functions, ledger fields, transaction-engine result codes, and the execution entry point to production-ready names. Anyone testing the Smart Escrow tech needs to update their configurations for the new Devnet.
What Smart Escrow changes
Standard XRPL escrows let users lock funds for a set period or until a cryptographic condition is met. Smart Escrow adds a small WebAssembly program directly to the escrow, which then decides whether the escrow can complete, opening the door to far more complex release conditions.
As described in the XLS-100 proposal, Smart Escrows form the initial layer of programmability for the XRP Ledger. Possible use cases include notary approvals, compliance holds, real estate deals, auctions, and other conditional peer-to-peer arrangements. In theory, funds can only leave the escrow once an approval is entered, a compliance check is fulfilled, or an oracle supplies external information that satisfies set criteria.
