X-Energy, public since April, has joined Project Prometheus, an AI-nuclear initiative with Idaho National Laboratory, Nvidia, and Amazon aimed at speeding up reactor design and licensing. The small modular reactor developer already claims a 144-reactor pipeline, but Motley Fool analyst Jeff Siegel still calls the stock high-risk given the gap between that pipeline and actual commercial operation.
X-Energy has been public only since April, but the small modular reactor developer has already placed itself at the intersection of two of the market's biggest themes: artificial intelligence and nuclear power. In July, the company became a founding member of Project Prometheus, an initiative led by Idaho National Laboratory, Nvidia, and Amazon. The program received $60 million through the Department of Energy, while X-Energy is contributing $10 million of its own capital along with proprietary reactor and nuclear fuel data.
AI targets nuclear's construction bottleneck
The goal is to apply AI models across reactor design, regulatory documentation, manufacturing, construction, fuel fabrication, and eventually semi-autonomous operations. X-Energy's primary reactor, the Xe-100, is an 80-megawatt small modular reactor, and the company already has customers lined up. Dow Inc. is working with X-Energy on a four-reactor project at its Seadrift site in Texas, while Amazon is backing a separate project with Energy Northwest that could ultimately support more than 5 gigawatts by 2039. British energy company Centrica is also working with X-Energy on potential projects in the U.K.
Altogether, X-Energy says its project pipeline consists of 144 reactors representing roughly 11.5 gigawatts of potential capacity. But nuclear projects have historically suffered long development timelines and construction delays, and that is where AI could matter: shaving time and cost off design and licensing could improve the economics of the pipeline. The company's TRISO-X subsidiary is also building the TX-1 fuel fabrication facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, which is expected to become the first commercial U.S. plant dedicated to TRISO fuel and could eventually supply as many as 11 Xe-100 reactors.
Revenue climbs, but stays project-based
X-Energy isn't profitable yet, and its current revenue shouldn't be confused with sales of commercial reactors. Q2 revenue and grant income reached $54.6 million, up 154% year over year, though much of that growth came from engineering work and government-supported development tied to the Xe-100. The company does have capital to work with: by the end of June, X-Energy reported $1.9 billion in total liquidity and no debt. Shares still fell 6.77% to $17.22, leaving the company with a market cap of $7.0 billion.
High risk, not a conventional buy
X-Energy could benefit from AI in two directions at once: AI data centers are driving demand for power, while AI could also help the company design and deploy the reactors needed to meet it. But there is still a wide gap between claiming an 11.5-gigawatt pipeline and actually operating that much commercial capacity. Licensing, construction, financing, supply-chain execution, and customer commitments all have to fall into place first. Motley Fool analyst Jeff Siegel views X-Energy as a high-risk nuclear growth stock rather than a conventional energy investment.
