Historical patterns around new technology, inflation, and stock valuations are lining up in ways that preceded past market bubbles, according to a Motley Fool analysis. The Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq Composite each slipped as the piece-by-piece case builds.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 1.21% on Sept. 17, 2026. The S&P 500 fell 0.45% the same session. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.01%, and Motley Fool analyst Sean Williams argues the puzzle pieces for an AI bubble-bursting event appear to be falling into place.

For the better part of the last four years, AI has been Wall Street's leading catalyst, lifting all three indices to new heights. But Williams points to three historical patterns that suggest the run may not hold.

Every major tech breakthrough has endured an early bubble

For more than three decades, every game-changing technology, including the internet, has eventually gone through a bubble-bursting event. Investors tend to overestimate how quickly businesses can adopt and optimize a new technology. Internet-driven businesses, Williams notes, didn't fully mature until years after the dot-com bubble burst, and AI's spending boom does not mean the optimization problem is solved.

Elevated inflation could force the Fed's hand

The Federal Open Market Committee has specifically labeled the AI infrastructure build-out as inflationary, alongside tariffs and the Iran war. Persistent supply shortages are boosting AI companies' pricing power, but those higher prices are working their way down to consumers. As a result, the most direct way to tame inflation that stays entrenched is for the Fed to raise interest rates, which would make borrowing costlier for a buildout financed partly by debt.

Valuations echo history's warning signs

The S&P 500's Shiller P/E Ratio has pushed the index to the second-priciest stock market in history. The previous five times the ratio topped 30, the Dow, S&P 500, or Nasdaq Composite eventually fell 20% or considerably more. Beyond the index-level valuation, select AI leaders carry price-to-sales ratios above the historical bubble threshold of 30 — SpaceX trades at a P/S ratio well above that level, and Anthropic, which is preparing for its IPO, does too.
