Visa agreed to buy behavioral-biometrics firm BioCatch for $2.4 billion in cash, its biggest security-focused deal in years. The purchase nearly doubles BioCatch's valuation from two years ago and brings in-house fraud-detection technology already used by hundreds of banks worldwide.

Visa said on Monday it will buy fraud intelligence provider BioCatch for $2.4 billion in cash, according to Reuters. BioCatch confirmed the planned deal on LinkedIn the same day.

What BioCatch brings to Visa

BioCatch builds behavioral biometrics software: it analyzes how a user swipes, types, holds a phone, and pauses between actions to build a behavioral fingerprint that is difficult for fraudsters to replicate. In 2025, the company's platform analyzed $17.2 trillion in transactions, roughly equivalent to 70% of US GDP. That same year, it says it helped prevent $4 billion in fraudulent activity. More than 350 banks globally use its technology. The company says its platform also protects over 1.7 billion devices worldwide.

A steep repricing for BioCatch

The price marks a sharp jump in value. Permira Growth Opportunities took a majority stake in BioCatch at a $1.3 billion valuation in September 2024, meaning Monday's price nearly doubles that figure over Permira's roughly 22-month holding period. Visa is not alone in this push: Mastercard, PayPal, and a growing roster of fintech challengers are all investing heavily in security infrastructure, and owning BioCatch outright gives Visa proprietary technology that rivals cannot simply license.

Why speed matters in real-time payments

As real-time payment systems expand, the window to catch fraud shrinks, since an instant payment cannot be clawed back the way a credit card charge can. BioCatch's real-time behavioral analysis is built for that faster, less forgiving landscape. The deal still awaits formal confirmation of terms and regulatory approval. If it closes at the reported range, though, it would stand as one of the largest pure-play fraud prevention acquisitions in fintech history.
