The US Treasury sold $70 billion of five-year notes on August 26 at a high yield of 4.393%, capping a year in which five-year yields climbed roughly 40 basis points. Demand came in a touch stronger than average, with domestic direct bidders taking a bigger share of the sale than usual.

The US Treasury sold $70 billion of five-year notes at a high yield of 4.393%. The tail came in at 0.2 basis points above the when-issued level of 4.391%, and Investinglive graded the auction a B.

This caps a year of climbing borrowing costs on the maturity. Five-year notes cleared at 3.980% in March, rose to 4.200% in June and reached 4.408% in July. That's roughly a 40-basis-point increase over five months, in a year where five-year yields have ranged between 3.6% and 4.4%. Thursday's 4.393% high yield lands just below July's high, keeping the trend near the top of that band.

Demand comes in above average

The bid-to-cover ratio landed at 2.37x, above the average of 2.32x, a stronger showing than the 2.29x-to-2.35x range recent five-year auctions had produced heading into the sale. Direct bidders, largely domestic institutions, took 28.4% of the auction versus an average of 21.2%.

Indirect bidders serve as a proxy for foreign central banks and overseas institutional investors. They took 61.5% of the auction versus an average of 65.4%, while primary dealers, who absorb whatever direct and indirect buyers don't take, were left with 10.05% versus an average of 13.4%.

Why the auction matters beyond bonds

Each auction is a direct transaction between the US government and the investors funding its deficit, and the clearing yield is effectively the price the government pays for its spending. Because Treasury yields anchor borrowing costs across the US dollar system, a stronger-than-average bid-to-cover ratio alongside a slightly lighter indirect-bidder share points to steady, if not spectacular, demand for US government debt.
