US airstrikes, naval escorts, and a mine-clearing operation have sharply cut Iran's ability to disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, the channel that carries roughly a fifth of the world's oil supply. Traffic through the strait had collapsed to a handful of ships at the height of Iranian interdiction, and US Central Command declared the mine-clearing mission complete by late August 2026.

Iran's leverage over the Strait of Hormuz is now significantly diminished, according to US officials tracking a sustained American military campaign that began in the summer of 2026. The strait is barely 21 miles wide at its narrowest point, yet it carries about a fifth of global oil supply, and Iran has used that geography as leverage for decades.

From 100 ships a day to a handful

Before hostilities escalated, the strait handled between 15 and 20 million barrels of oil a day, carried by more than 100 vessels moving through the waterway daily. Iran then launched repeated strikes on commercial shipping to assert authority over transit, and at the height of that campaign, traffic collapsed to just a handful of ships.

The US responded by targeting more than 80 Iranian sites in July 2026 alone, moving beyond simple deterrence toward degrading the Iranian military assets, command infrastructure, and naval capabilities that enabled the interference.

Mine-clearing as the pivotal operation

Of all the operations conducted, mine-clearing may prove the most consequential for reopening the strait long-term. CENTCOM confirmed the mission's completion by late August 2026. The cleared lanes supported transit for about 1,500 vessels carrying roughly 750 million barrels of oil.

Mines create a uniquely persistent threat in a confined maritime space. Unlike an airstrike, which happens and ends, a single uncleared mine can halt traffic across an entire corridor, because no commercial captain or shipping insurer will accept that risk without verified clearance.

A sustained US presence

The deployment of the USS Theodore Roosevelt to the region, announced in August 2026, signals that the US intends to maintain its presence through the reopening period and beyond.
