President Donald Trump has publicly demanded that new Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh cut interest rates to the lowest level of any country in the world, tying the demand to trade policy. The threat lands during a crucial FOMC meeting cycle and tests the central bank's independence.

Donald Trump's latest attack on the Federal Reserve targets the man he handpicked to run it. The president took to Truth Social in early September to demand the Fed lower interest rates, tying the demand to trade policy by threatening restrictions against countries that run a trade deficit with the US.

A new chair, same old playbook

Trump called for the "LOWEST RATE of any country in the World", according to his Truth Social post — a demand at odds with the Fed's 2% inflation target as upward pressure on producer prices is already emerging. Warsh was confirmed as Fed Chair on May 13, 2026, replacing Jerome Powell in a 54-45 Senate vote. Powell's term as chair ended two days later, though he remains a Fed governor until 2028.

That narrow confirmation margin already signaled Warsh would begin his four-year term without broad institutional support. The Truth Social broadside marks the first major public confrontation between Trump and his own pick for the job, arriving as policymakers actively weigh their next move on rates.

Independence under pressure

Analysts have flagged that Trump's comments could undermine the Fed's ability to anchor inflation expectations, linking trade and monetary policy in unprecedented ways. Powell, meanwhile, faces scrutiny amid a reported DOJ investigation into the Federal Reserve's renovation costs during his tenure, and some senators have vowed to block nominees connected to the probe.

Despite the pressure, markets have remained largely unfazed. Some participants appear to be betting that institutional checks will hold and that the Fed's structural independence can withstand presidential pressure.

What Warsh does next

If Warsh cuts rates to appease the White House while inflation pressures are building, the Fed risks accelerating price increases. If he holds firm, he invites escalating political conflict with a president who has shown no reluctance to attack the institutions he oversees.

Investors are watching the FOMC's upcoming decisions with unusual attention, since the gap between what Trump demands and what the economic data supports is wide enough to move markets in either direction.
