The Trump administration is stuck in the Iran war, unable to withdraw without admitting defeat but unable to force a win either, according to an Oilprice.com analysis. Reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has controlled and closed to unfriendly shipping since the war began, has replaced regime change as Washington's only remaining objective, while dwindling U.S. munitions narrow its options.

The Trump administration appears trapped in Iran, according to an analysis published by Oilprice.com. It cannot walk away without acknowledging defeat, yet the war's original goals — regime change, eliminating Iran's missile capability, and preventing a nuclear weapon — have grown increasingly unattainable. What remains within reach, the analysis argues, is a narrower prize: reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran now controls and has effectively closed to unfriendly traffic.

Hormuz becomes the only leverage left

Since the war began, Iran has halted shipments of oil, natural gas, petrochemicals, helium and fertilizer through the strait, except for its own cargoes and shipments tied to allied governments. Because these commodities make up a large share of global crude oil and other supplies, the closure has pushed prices higher and produced shortages in multiple regions, the analysis says.

Why Trump won't just walk away

The analysis lays out four reasons a withdrawal is politically unacceptable. First, conceding that a power widely presumed to be second-rate could defeat the United States would invite challenges to American dominance elsewhere, including the South China Sea and Taiwan. Second, it would cost the Republican Party support from pro-Israel donors. Third, it would confirm the view of Americans who already opposed the war and could bring losses at the polls in the November midterm elections. Fourth, it would be a personal embarrassment for a president who has always portrayed himself as a winner.

Depleted munitions narrow the options

Even if U.S. forces seized the shoreline around the strait, Iran could still strike shipping with missiles and drones launched hundreds of miles inland, the analysis notes. Washington's own stockpiles add to the problem: dwindling offensive and defensive munitions are making it harder to defend Persian Gulf bases or strike Iran, and replenishing them would take years, not months.

Oil markets show the strain

Benchmark crude reflects the standoff and the broader geopolitical risk hanging over the region. WTI crude traded at $79.58, down 6.01%. Brent crude changed hands at $83.87, down 4.62%.

Three costly paths forward

The analysis frames Washington's choices as stark: escalate and risk a wider war that could pull Persian Gulf and Israeli energy infrastructure into the fighting, triggering shortages that could persist for years; withdraw and accept Iranian control of the strait and de facto dominance in the region; or maintain the current embargo without advancing or retreating, a path the analysis says leads to the same prolonged economic damage as Hormuz stays closed.
