Tesla's authorized robotaxi fleet in Texas has grown tenfold to 420 vehicles in about four months, though it still trails Waymo's fleet in the state. The milestone lands the same day Tesla holds a low-detail Cybercab launch event in Austin, a buildup that competed for attention with Ford's publicity push around its Fathom electric pickup.

Tesla's authorized robotaxi fleet in Texas has reached 420 vehicles, a tenfold jump from the 42 vehicles it had registered when a new Texas disclosure law took effect on May 28, 2026. Waymo had 577 vehicles authorized at that point and still holds the larger fleet.

From 42 to 420 in four months

Tesla launched its Austin robotaxi service in June 2025 with safety monitors riding along, then moved to unsupervised driving in parts of the city by mid-2026. The registered fleet climbed to roughly 175 vehicles by July 15, 2026, a stretch that included a single-day registration spike of 58 vehicles. By early September, the total had risen to around 314 vehicles, including 45 purpose-built Cybercabs mixed in with the existing Model Y fleet.

Registered and operating, however, are not the same thing. Tracking data show that during certain weeks in mid-2026, as few as 20 Tesla vehicles ran unsupervised routes in Austin — fewer than the 42 vehicles registered back in May.

Waymo keeps its lead

Even after the tenfold increase, Tesla's 420 vehicles remain well behind Waymo's 577-vehicle count from late May. Tesla has also widened its footprint beyond Austin, reaching Dallas and Houston by April 2026 with fewer geographic restrictions on its self-driving routes.

A low-key Cybercab launch

Tesla built toward the fleet numbers ahead of a Cybercab event in Austin on September 3, 2026. The company invited existing robotaxi riders to join a launch event but disclosed no other details in advance, Reuters reported on September 2. According to Reuters: Tesla marketed the event as "Exclusive Access: Cybercab" in posts on X.

The buildup competed for headlines with Ford, which posted photos of its camouflaged Fathom electric pickup on X on September 1, two days before the Cybercab event. The Wall Street Journal reported that Ford aims to sell 100,000 Fathoms in its first year of production, a truck priced under $30,000. The Cybercab is priced around $30,000 as well, though CleanTechnica notes it's difficult to see a use case for it beyond fleets.

The metric that matters

Texas's new disclosure law gives investors a rare real-time view of fleet scaling, but a registered vehicle is not an operating one. The numbers that matter going forward are completed rides, unsupervised miles, and how Tesla's safety record holds up against Waymo's more mature operation.
