SpaceX's first quarterly 13F filings since its June IPO show institutional investors held roughly $611 billion of the stock, with hedge funds and mutual funds overweight relative to the broader market. Early backers Alphabet, Valor Management, and Fidelity top the shareholder list, but staggered lockup expirations through the rest of 2026 could bring fresh selling pressure before the next round of filings arrives in mid-November.

Institutional investors turn up overweight in SpaceX

SpaceX stock appeared in 1,932 13F filings last quarter, with institutional investors holding a combined $611 billion. Goldman Sachs analysts found the stock widely held among hedge fund managers, with mutual funds as a group overweight the position. Pension funds and endowments also held significant stakes.

The biggest shareholders were Alphabet, Valor Management, and Fidelity Investments, all early SpaceX investors. Alphabet and Fidelity each invested $1 billion in 2015, while Valor first partnered with the company in 2008. As of the end of June, the three held approximately $232 billion in stock combined.

Mutual fund buying is considered the stronger signal of manager conviction, since hedge funds may have gained exposure before the stock went public. Still, the filings reflect positioning from before the IPO's early trading days, and a 45-day reporting delay means the next filings won't arrive until mid-November.

Lockups keep pressure on the stock

SpaceX sold about 5% of the company to public investors at its IPO, which valued the company near $1.77 trillion after it raised $86 billion. CEO Elon Musk owns roughly 48% of shares and has said he doesn't plan to sell. That leaves about 47% held by early investors and insiders, who face a staggered lockup schedule designed to release shares gradually.

Two lockup expirations already hit in August. The market absorbed the first one well, but the second put pressure on the share price. Six more expirations remain before the end of 2026, including two more before the third quarter ends, and what large early holders like Alphabet, Valor, and Fidelity do next will be a key signal for the stock.

SpaceX's market cap sat near $1.9 trillion as shares traded around $141.50, up 0.45% on the day. The stock's near-term growth depends heavily on its neocloud operations selling AI compute to supply-constrained labs, a business that carries substantial capital expenditures alongside its revenue.
