Solana moved its mainnet to a 200ms slot target at the start of epoch 1053 on October 9, completing the staged SIMD-0525 upgrade. The first full epoch under the new target averaged 218.3ms per slot, above the configured figure.
Solana has completed the final reduction in its staged slot-time upgrade, setting a 200ms target on its mainnet at the start of epoch 1053 on October 9. The first completed epoch under that target lasted 26.2 hours.
Epoch 1053 activates the final cut
Anza confirmed 200ms slots were live on mainnet-beta at approximately 14:42 UTC on October 9, as reported by Solana Compass. The activation completes SIMD-0525, a rollout that had previously reduced the target from 400ms to 250ms.
The Solana Foundation's upgrade page places the reduction at epoch 1053. It was the last step in the staged cut from 400ms to 200ms, not a separate upgrade path.
First full epoch averaged 218.3ms
According to Solana Compass epoch data, the first full epoch after activation averaged 218.3ms per slot and ran for 26.2 hours. That average sits above the configured 200ms target.
The two figures measure different things. The 200ms value is the intended slot time, while 218.3ms is the measured average for the first completed epoch on the shorter schedule, so it works as an early performance reading.
An 800ms leader window for validators
Shorter slots also change the schedule for validators. At 200ms slots, the four-slot leader window falls to 800ms from 1.6 seconds at 400ms slots, according to the Solana Foundation's validator economics overview.
According to the Solana Foundation, validators also vote roughly twice as often per unit of wall-clock time under the shorter setting.
