Canadian mining stocks fell sharply on Wednesday after silver prices dropped more than 5% and gold fell more than 3%, triggering a broad selloff among producers, royalty firms and streaming companies. Barrick Gold, Wheaton Precious Metals, Kinross Gold and Pan American Silver all declined, while First Quantum Minerals was among the biggest decliners. Rising oil prices added to inflation concerns that could complicate the outlook for miners, which are now facing concerns over near-term earnings and cash flows.

Metals rout spreads through the sector

Canadian mining stocks fell sharply on Wednesday as a steep drop in silver and gold prices weighed on precious metals producers. Silver prices fell more than 5%, while gold dropped more than 3%, prompting investors to cut exposure to mining stocks amid heightened commodity-market volatility.

The selloff hit both producers and royalty and streaming companies, underscoring the sector's sensitivity to swings in metals prices. The moves came as precious metals suffered one of their steepest single-session declines in months, with investors reassessing the outlook for metals prices amid renewed concerns over inflation and interest rates.

Miners post broad declines

Barrick Gold fell 2.7%, while Wheaton Precious Metals and Kinross Gold each lost 2.8%. Franco-Nevada declined 2.4% and Pan American Silver dropped 2.8%. First Quantum Minerals was among the biggest decliners, falling 4.3%, while Lundin Mining shed 3.1%.

The broader selloff also showed that companies with less direct exposure to metal prices were not immune. Wheaton and Franco-Nevada, which operate streaming and royalty businesses, respectively, both declined as investors reduced risk across the sector.

Oil prices add to inflation pressure

Higher oil prices have added another layer of uncertainty for miners. Crude prices above $100 a barrel have revived inflation concerns and could complicate the outlook for interest rates, potentially weighing on demand for non-yielding assets such as gold and silver.

The sharp decline in metals prices has also raised concerns about near-term earnings and cash flows for miners. As a result, production costs, balance-sheet strength and capital discipline are becoming increasingly important for investors weighing the sector's next move.
