Sberbank has started testing crypto purchases, sales, deposits and withdrawals in its Sberbank Online app. Broader access is planned from December 1, but only if the relevant regulatory framework takes effect.
Sberbank has begun testing cryptocurrency operations in its Sberbank Online mobile app, including buying, selling, depositing and withdrawing digital assets. The pilot was reported on October 8, two days after the Bank of Russia admitted the lender as a digital depository.
The test sits inside the digital services of Russia's largest bank, not in a standalone exchange product. For now it remains a test, and the December timetable applies to broader access.
Bitcoin, Ether and USDT are among the initial assets
Bitcoin, Ether and Tether's USDT are among the initial lineup, which also includes other popular cryptoassets, according to RBC Crypto. USDT is a dollar-linked stablecoin issued by Tether.
However, the reported information does not include a complete list of the additional assets. The announcement also does not set out the pilot's customer scope, transaction limits, or which networks and transfer methods the bank will use.
Bank of Russia admission opened the route
On October 6, the Bank of Russia said five digital depositories and four cryptocurrency-exchange organisations had been admitted to the financial market under Russia's new digital-currency framework. Sberbank was one of several entities admitted, not the only one.
Sberbank's profile with the regulator records its digital-depository status from the same date. Admission as a digital depository and an app-based retail service remain distinct elements of the developing regime.
December 1 rollout depends on regulation
Sberbank plans to open the service to a broader set of customers from December 1, 2026, subject to the relevant regulatory framework taking effect, according to Kommersant. That condition makes the date a planned milestone, not an unconditional launch commitment.
The planned functionality is also expected to extend to SberInvestments and SberBusiness. The report gives no separate rollout dates for either platform.
