Russia confirmed that peace talks with Ukraine and the U.S. will take place in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 10-11. Separately, the White House said First Lady Melania Trump will host Russian and Ukrainian representatives to discuss a local ceasefire in Kherson. Moscow also signaled that a three-way leaders' meeting with the U.S. and China may be on the table.
Russia confirmed on Tuesday that peace talks with Ukraine and the U.S. will go ahead in Abu Dhabi on Nov. 10-11. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Putin aide Vladimir Medinsky will serve as Moscow's chief negotiator, according to Reuters.
Washington to mediate Abu Dhabi talks
U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff said late Monday that Washington will mediate the talks, which will focus on security arrangements, de-escalation and humanitarian issues. He added that U.S. negotiators will meet European and NATO officials in Brussels this week to discuss post-war security guarantees and Ukraine's reconstruction.
Peskov also said the Kremlin hopes to finalize plans for a trilateral meeting between the leaders of Russia, the U.S. and China in the coming days. Earlier reports said these countries were planning to negotiate an end to the war without Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the table.
Melania Trump to host Kherson ceasefire meeting
The White House said the first lady will bring Russian and Ukrainian representatives to the White House to discuss the local ceasefire in Kherson. It did not name the representatives, and said Melania Trump will deliver remarks on the Oleshky ceasefire at 11 a.m. ET Thursday.
The meeting follows a six-day ceasefire in the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky and surrounding areas, which ended Monday. The pause allowed residents to evacuate, and the White House said the first lady brokered it. Ukraine accused Russia of using the ceasefire to reinforce its military positions in the city.
Kyiv demands a seat at the table
Zelenskyy has said any negotiations over Ukraine's future must include Kyiv. On Oct. 20, he said: "Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine."
