Ontology resumed block production on Oct. 12 after a nearly 43-hour halt over a security warning about an ecosystem project. The team says no funds were lost from the network itself, but the affected project and any losses there remain undisclosed.
Ontology resumed mainnet block production on Oct. 12 after a nearly 43-hour halt prompted by a security warning about a project built on the network. Onchain transactions can be processed again.
A gap of 42 hours between blocks
The official explorer records block 20,911,825 at 10:48:11 a.m. ET on Oct. 10 and the next block at 5:44:20 a.m. ET on Oct. 12. The Defiant calculated a gap of 42 hours, 56 minutes and nine seconds from those timestamps.
In its Oct. 10 announcement, Ontology said it had received an urgent report of a potential security risk involving an ecosystem project that could threaten assets on the network. A majority of consensus nodes agreed to suspend production to support the investigation and mitigate risks.
No funds lost from the network, but questions remain
According to the Ontology team in its restart announcement: "Ontology’s core infrastructure remains safe, with no funds lost from the Ontology network itself"
However, that statement did not identify the project, explain the vulnerability or say whether the project or its users had lost funds. No technical explanation or detailed public post-mortem accompanied the initial recovery announcement, according to Bitcoin News.
Some exchanges including Bitget and South Korea's Coinone suspended deposits and withdrawals involving Ontology-network assets during the disruption.
Second emergency pause in about six weeks
Ontology had already halted its mainnet on Aug. 31 after developers flagged a potential security concern during a daily check. In a Sept. 1 update, the team said the earlier investigation had identified malicious attack activity targeting the network, while maintaining that user assets were not compromised.
The October announcements instead described a security incident involving an ecosystem project. The earlier restart came on Sept. 2, after a security review and network upgrade that required all Sync Nodes to move to version 3.1.5.
Bitcoin News counts two security-related shutdowns in approximately six weeks for the layer one network, and the public still has not learned what threatened it this time.
