Oil futures jumped roughly 2% at the start of the week after Iran escalated its retaliation against the United States, with Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps announcing fresh missile and drone strikes on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The chokepoint carries roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply, and the new strikes follow a deadly Iranian attack on US forces in Jordan that killed two American service members.

US oil futures jumped roughly 2% as the new trading week opened, while equity index futures held little changed. The move tracked Iran's latest retaliatory step against Washington: Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced another round of missile and drone strikes targeting ships it says are violating Iranian routing requirements in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran targets shipping in the Strait of Hormuz

The strait is the single most important bottleneck in global energy logistics — roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply passes through its waters on any given day, making each strike a potential trigger for price shocks. War-risk premiums for vessels transiting the strait have climbed significantly since the escalation began, and shipping traffic through the waterway remains below pre-conflict norms.

Escalation follows deadly attack on US forces

The Hormuz strikes extend a broader pattern of retaliation. Iranian ballistic missile and drone strikes on Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan killed two US service members, with one still missing, following a July 17 assault that US Central Command called one of the deadliest incidents in the conflict. President Trump responded with a pledge to retaliate, saying he would “hit them hard.”

IRGC Commander Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri has publicly highlighted the force's enhanced missile capabilities and ongoing naval drills in the region, and the frequency of reported launches suggests neither side is looking for an off-ramp in the near term.
