Nvidia holds the highest share of "AI system control" among the three major AI chipmakers, according to a Motley Fool analysis, because it sells full racks, complete DGX systems, and the CUDA software stack rather than standalone components. Broadcom and AMD post strong AI revenue too, but Broadcom's custom chips run inside other companies' systems, and AMD sits between the two with a broadening but still secondary platform.

Nvidia's data center business produced more than $80 billion in revenue in the first half of fiscal 2026, with data centers now accounting for over 90% of total sales. That scale comes from selling entire systems, not just chips.

Nvidia sells the whole platform

Nvidia ships full racks such as the GB200 NVL72, complete DGX systems, networking gear, and the CUDA software platform that runs on top. As a result, when a hyperscaler or large enterprise scopes a new AI cluster, it often starts from Nvidia's reference design and toolchain and builds the rest of the system around it.

The stock traded at $216.57, down 0.46%, giving Nvidia a $5.3 trillion market cap. Its 52-week range runs from $164.07 to $236.54.

Broadcom controls the chip, not the system

Broadcom, by contrast, designs custom AI accelerators and high-speed switches that power Alphabet's TPUs, Meta's accelerators, and OpenAI's clusters — but under each customer's own brand. The company reported about $8.4 billion in AI semiconductor revenue for its first quarter of fiscal 2026, up 106% year over year, and carries an AI chip backlog of nearly $73 billion. Yet because customers control the overall system and software layer, Broadcom's AI system control share stays lower than Nvidia's.

AMD is building toward a fuller platform

AMD occupies the middle ground. Its Instinct MI350 series and upcoming MI400 generation pair with EPYC CPUs and Pensando networking in the Helios rack-scale design, while the open ROCm software stack extends its reach beyond stand-alone GPUs. Still, many customers treat AMD as an alternative rather than the default, since Nvidia continues to control most of the ecosystem.

The gap in system control share, the analysis concludes, is what explains why the market prices Nvidia at a premium over Broadcom and AMD despite all three posting strong AI-driven growth.
