Nvidia's guarantees and commitments to the AI ecosystem had climbed past $530 billion by July 2026, reshaping the chipmaker into a financier as much as a hardware supplier. The strategy rests on equity stakes and residual-value guarantees that turn GPUs into collateral, but it also leaves roughly $300 billion in customer-related liabilities sitting largely off the balance sheet.

Nvidia no longer just sells the equipment for the AI buildout. By July 2026, its guarantees and commitments to the AI ecosystem had climbed past $530 billion, a figure that makes the chipmaker as much a capital provider as a hardware vendor.

How the financing machine works

The strategy has two main parts. First, Nvidia takes equity stakes in AI startups and data infrastructure firms. Second, it offers residual-value guarantees on GPU clusters, promising that the chips will hold enough value to make the financing math work, much like a residual-value guarantee on a leased car.

Behind this is an effort to recast GPUs as durable assets that lenders can accept as collateral, similar to a building or an aircraft. That helps customers who want Nvidia hardware but cannot pay for it upfront.

The numbers add up quickly. Over three years, Nvidia pledged more than $70 billion to startup investments and provided roughly $300 billion in financial support to customers. In mid-August 2026, it also partnered with major financial institutions on a third-party effort projected to exceed $500 billion in AI infrastructure financing.

Some individual deals stand out on their own. Nvidia agreed to a $105 billion backstop for a major Ohio data-center project for OpenAI, alongside a $1.5 billion equity investment in SB Energy.

The risk hiding off the balance sheet

Nvidia's customer-related liabilities are estimated at around $300 billion, and much of that sits off the balance sheet. These liabilities are contingent, meaning they tend to surface during downturns, and the concern is circularity: Nvidia helps finance customers, customers buy Nvidia chips, and those chips back the financing.

GPU resale values are the pressure point. If borrowers default, the collateral backing their loans could flood the secondary market, which in turn could push down the value of the very chips Nvidia guaranteed. In late September 2026, the company held discussions with insurers about risk structures to cover potential defaults from borrowers relying on GPU collateral.

Nvidia does carry a cushion, though. Its cash and liquidity position is estimated at around $99 billion, but that is still well short of the roughly $300 billion in customer-related liabilities it stands behind.

What it means for the AI buildout

For investors, Nvidia's growth is now tied to credit conditions, not just chip demand. Tracking the company increasingly means watching default risk, collateral values and financing appetite alongside product cycles and data-center orders.

Several signals are worth watching: how the insurance arrangements take shape, how secondary-market GPU pricing holds up, and the progress of flagship projects like the Ohio OpenAI data center that the $105 billion backstop supports.
