Nvidia's 3.8% jump did nearly all the work lifting Wall Street's major indexes on Wednesday, adding more to the Nasdaq Composite's gain than any other stock. The move builds on a concentration trend that has made Nvidia roughly 8% of the S&P 500 and, following its August earnings pop, the world's largest public company by market value.
Nvidia carried the S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Dow Jones Industrial Average higher on Wednesday, with the chipmaker's advance responsible for most of the market's move. Nvidia jumped 3.8% to $225.67, adding roughly 0.38 percentage points to the Nasdaq Composite's gain on its own — more than any other stock moved the index. The Dow Jones added 0.4%, while the S&P 500 rose 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 0.4% as of early afternoon trading.
One stock did nearly all the lifting
Meta Platforms climbed 2.9% but still could not match Nvidia's outsized pull on the indexes.
Strip both Nvidia and Meta out of the calculation, and the Nasdaq Composite would be trading lower right now, while the S&P 500's gain would shrink to just 0.12%.
How index funds amplify the move
Nvidia now carries roughly an 8% weighting in the S&P 500, and its price swings alone often account for more than half of the index's total daily move. Index funds tracking the benchmark have no choice but to hold Nvidia in proportion to that weight, and as its market cap grows, its index weight grows with it — forcing more passive buying that pushes the price higher still.
Dell's results sparked the chip rally
Wednesday's chip rally traces back to strong quarterly results from Dell Technologies, whose server and AI infrastructure numbers signaled corporate demand for AI hardware isn't cooling. That builds on Nvidia's own fiscal Q2 report on Aug 27, when shares jumped 8.7% in a single session, adding $442 billion in market value — the second-largest single-day market-cap gain ever recorded for any company.
Nvidia's total market capitalization now stands at roughly $5.5 trillion, making it the world's largest publicly traded company. According to Crypto Briefing, CEO Jensen Huang called the moment a "golden age" for AI on the earnings call, projecting growth through at least fiscal 2028.
Elsewhere, New York Fed President John Williams said the surge in Treasury yields reflects a strong economy driven by AI and data center investment, with analysts pricing a 66% chance of a small rate hike at the Sept. 15-16 Fed meeting. Gold climbed 1% while the iShares Bitcoin Trust slipped 0.1%, a small break from the safe-harbor correlation the two assets have held for weeks.
