Newmont Corporation shares rose 34.5% in August, lifted by climbing gold prices and an agreement that resolved its dispute with Barrick Mining over their Nevada joint venture. Rising U.S. bond yields amid high government debt and ongoing geopolitical tension may be arguably adding to gold's appeal as a safe-haven asset.

Gold prices and a Barrick deal drive the surge

Newmont's stock climbed sharply in August as gold prices rose through the month, and miners carry operational leverage to the price of the metal they extract. The rally was not unique to Newmont, since other gold miners benefited from the same move in bullion.

The main company-specific catalyst arrived on Aug. 10, when Newmont and Barrick Mining reached an agreement over their Nevada Gold Mines joint venture. Newmont agreed to pay Barrick $1.95 billion to bring certain Barrick assets into the venture, and it consented to Barrick's planned initial public offering of its North American gold assets.

This resolution helps Barrick pursue its own strategic goals while derisking Newmont's stock. It also lets the joint venture generate operational synergies from the added assets, increasing the value of Newmont's 38.5% stake in the partnership.

Debt levels and yields fuel gold's safe-haven case

Persistently high U.S. government bond yields through the month are arguably one reason gold and gold miners have come into favor, even though rising yields have historically weighed on gold since the metal itself yields nothing. But that relationship could be shifting, as U.S. public debt topped $40 trillion this month and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has been intervening in markets to try to bring yields down.

Continued geopolitical conflict may also lead global central banks to prefer holding gold over U.S. Treasuries, a trend that supports gold's price over the long term. These factors remain debatable, but enough market participants believe in them to have pushed gold prices, and Newmont's share price, higher in August.
