European natural gas contracts held near five-month highs on Tuesday but stopped climbing after Washington's latest sanctions against Iran stopped short of disrupting supply. The pause follows a 7% weekly surge, while EU storage sits just above 60% of capacity heading into autumn.

European natural gas contracts traded virtually unchanged on Tuesday, pausing near five-month highs after a new US sanctions package against Iran failed to trigger the supply shock traders had braced for. The quiet session halts a multi-week rally that had pushed regional gas hubs higher.

Benchmark Dutch front-month futures and equivalent British wholesale gas contracts consolidated after an aggressive 7% weekly surge that had lifted regional gas hubs to their highest levels since mid-March.

Iran sanctions stop short of supply disruption

Traders spent the start of the week bracing for fresh supply bottlenecks after US officials warned of secondary sanctions targeting any trade partners supporting Tehran. According to Investing.com, the Trump administration had billed the move as an "economic D-Day" against Iran, but the announced measures largely reinforced existing restrictions on Iranian shipping and technology rather than introducing new maritime interdictions or vessel seizures in the Persian Gulf.

As a result, energy trading desks recalibrated risk premia after crude oil markets pulled back overnight, with Brent crude surrendering its overnight gains to trade near $91.50 a barrel. Nevertheless, the physical transit drag through the Strait of Hormuz remains unresolved, leaving a durable risk floor beneath European wholesale gas benchmarks.

Storage still lags ahead of heating season

Despite Tuesday's flatline price action, Europe's underlying energy supply framework remains deeply fragile ahead of the autumn heating season. Data from Gas Infrastructure Europe shows underground gas storage caverns across the European Union holding at just over 60% of total capacity.

Elevated summer power demand for air conditioning, combined with stranded Qatari LNG shipments, has severely impaired the seasonal replenishment process.
