The Nasdaq Composite and Nasdaq 100 are falling together but breaking down differently. The Composite is holding above its rising 100-day moving average, while the Nasdaq 100 has already broken below the same support level as chip and AI stocks get hit hard.
Both Nasdaq indices trade lower on the day, but their longer-term technical pictures are starting to diverge. As of 11:05 AM ET, the Nasdaq Composite is down roughly 1.0%, while the Nasdaq 100 is down roughly 1.3%, with chip and AI-related shares contributing to the larger decline.
Composite tests support, Nasdaq 100 already breaks it
The Nasdaq Composite is testing but so far holding its rising 100-day moving average at 25,982.22. Today's low reached 25,992.55, just above that level. Staying above it would keep buyers in the longer-term game, but a sustained break below would weaken the picture and likely encourage more selling.
Meanwhile, the Nasdaq 100 has already broken below its 100-day moving average at 29,167.25, reaching a low of 28,867.67. That break hands sellers firmer control, and the average now becomes resistance that buyers must reclaim to ease the bearish pressure.
Shorter-term bias stays bearish for both
Even with the divergence on the 100-day average, both indices trade below their 100- and 200-hour moving averages. The Composite's 100-hour average sits at 26,288.46 and its 200-hour average at 26,383.01, against Friday's close of 26,353. The Nasdaq 100's 100-hour average sits at 29,321.02 and its 200-hour average at 29,474.15, against Friday's close of 29,368.
Both indices closed Friday between their respective hourly averages, pointing to a neutral short-term bias. The move below both averages today has shifted that bias back toward sellers. If the indices are going to recover, they must first reclaim those hourly averages.
The key difference remains the longer-term picture: Composite buyers are still defending the rising 100-day average, while Nasdaq 100 buyers have already lost that line and now have more work to do.
