Microsoft will add consumption-based billing to its Microsoft 365 Copilot subscriptions, charging for advanced AI features through Copilot Credits. Basic tasks stay under the fixed seat fee. The company reported growth in customers actively using Copilot Credits.

Starting December 1, 2026, Microsoft will layer a consumption-based billing system on top of its existing Microsoft 365 Copilot subscriptions. Advanced AI features will be billed through Copilot Credits, priced at $0.01 each.

Seat fee stays, heavy workloads move to credits

The change is additive rather than a replacement. Basic, everyday AI tasks remain covered by the fixed seat fee, which currently ranges from $18 to $32 per user per month for Microsoft 365 Copilot Business licenses.

Heavier workloads, however, will bill differently. Copilot Cowork, Code, and Autopilot will move to consumption-based pricing through Copilot Credits.

New Microsoft 365 Copilot Business subscriptions starting December 1 carry a default limit of 4,000 credits per user per month. At the $0.01 list price, that equals approximately $40 in potential additional monthly cost for each power user.

Rollout dates and early usage

Stand-alone Copilot offerings become available starting December 1, 2026. CSP sandbox environments are expected to open for testing from November 2, 2026, which gives enterprise buyers time to evaluate the model.

Early numbers point to demand. Microsoft reported growth exceeding 75% quarter-over-quarter in customers actively using Copilot Credits. GitHub Copilot's consumption more than doubled after Microsoft moved it to consumption-based pricing.

CEO Satya Nadella has framed the transition as a move toward value-aligned pricing, particularly for organizations that engage deeply with AI capabilities in their daily workflows.

Spending cap limits the upside and eases budgeting risk

The default 4,000-credit limit helps organizations control costs, but it also caps Microsoft's upside at that ceiling unless customers choose to raise their limits. For enterprise buyers, AI budgeting becomes more complex, because finance teams used to predictable per-seat invoices will need to build consumption forecasting into their planning.

The default cap, rather than an open-ended meter, suggests Microsoft sees sticker shock as an adoption risk.
