Micron unveiled the world's first 512GB DDR5 server memory module on September 15, built by stacking DRAM dies vertically instead of adding more chips. Volume production waits until the second half of 2027, but the announcement lands as MU stock extends a one-year rally built on tight memory supply.

Micron built the equivalent of four memory sticks into one. The company announced the world's first 512GB DDR5 RDIMM on September 15, a server memory module that reaches its capacity through vertical stacking of DRAM dies connected by through-silicon vias rather than adding more chips to the board.

Volume production is set for the second half of 2027, timed to coincide with next-generation server platforms from AMD and Intel. Both chipmakers are reportedly validating Micron's design, according to Crypto Briefing. Micron itself says AMD and Intel have validated it for future platforms.

The module cuts power by more than 60%

The new module supports a maximum transfer rate of 9,200 MT/s, and a fully loaded dual-socket server with 24 slots can now hold up to 12TB of DDR5 memory. Each 512GB module draws just 16W, versus 44.2W for the four 128GB modules it replaces — more than 60% more efficient for the same capacity. Micron also cited up to a 1.4x efficiency gain on certain Spark SVM analytics workloads versus existing 256GB DDR5 setups.

MU stock extends its rally

MU closed at $977.50 Thursday after gaining 5.5%, extending a 511.97% one-year rally. Micron's shares had also ticked up roughly 1.2% to 1.4% following the module announcement, a modest but notable move given that the broader market was trending downward at the time. Because volume production is still two fiscal years out, the launch does not touch Micron's fiscal 2026 pricing or already-published fiscal 2027 estimates.

Demand still outruns supply

Fiscal Q3 2026 revenue reached $41.46 billion, up 345.7% year over year, at a non-GAAP gross margin of 84.9%. According to 24/7 Wall St., CEO Sanjay Mehrotra told investors: "DRAM and NAND industry demand continues to significantly exceed industry supply." Micron also said HBM4 has already crossed $1 billion in revenue supplying Nvidia, with its 12-high ramp running twice as fast as HBM3E.

Valuation against the cycle

MU trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 6x, with the average analyst target at $1,513.11. Consensus points to fiscal 2027 earnings per share of $156.0661 on revenue of $244.46 billion, up from a fiscal 2026 EPS estimate of $73.4388. Memory remains the most cyclical corner of semiconductors, and the 2027 pricing backdrop the new module lands into cannot be forecast from here.
