Meta and Alphabet posted opposite Q2 2026 earnings stories: Meta grew ad revenue but its margin compressed and free cash flow collapsed, while Alphabet beat estimates on both lines as its margin expanded. Meta shares are down for the year while Alphabet's are up, and the market has already priced the difference.

Meta beat revenue but missed EPS by 14.42%, snapping a six-quarter beat streak. Alphabet, by contrast, cleared both lines behind a Google Cloud surge. Both companies are pouring tens of billions into AI, but their Q2 numbers show very different returns on that spending so far.

Meta's Ad Engine Grows, Margin Cracks

Meta's advertising business kept expanding: ad revenue climbed 27% year over year to $59.36 billion, with impressions up 14% and price per ad up 12%. Family daily active people reached 3.60 billion across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp.

But operating margin compressed to 31% from 43% as costs jumped 55% to $42.03 billion, driven by a $2.40 billion legal charge tied to youth litigation and $1.18 billion in severance from an 8,000-headcount reduction. Free cash flow fell to $784 million, down 91.31%, as capital expenditure climbed to $30.12 billion. Mark Zuckerberg framed the spending as necessary, saying AI is powering the company's next generation of products and opening new enterprise opportunities.

Alphabet's Cloud Surge Lifts Margins

Alphabet's quarter came in cleaner. Revenue rose 24.23% to $119.80 billion, with Google Cloud accelerating to 82% growth at $24.77 billion. Search added 17%, YouTube ads 13%, and subscriptions 15%, while operating margin expanded to 34% — the opposite direction from Meta.

Gemini is now a mass product: it processes 22 billion API tokens per minute, the Gemini App reached 950 million monthly active users, and nearly 90% of the Fortune 100 use Gemini Enterprise. According to 24/7 Wall St., Sundar Pichai called it "an amazing quarter". Yet the growth came at a cost: Alphabet spent $44.92 billion on CapEx, ran free cash flow negative at -$5.86 billion, and suspended its buyback.

Markets Have Already Picked a Side

Meta trades at a 22 P/E against Alphabet's 15, and the two companies are guiding to very different AI budgets: Meta's 2026 CapEx guide sits at $130-145 billion, while Alphabet's trajectory runs near $190 billion. Meta shares are down 10.48% year to date, while Alphabet is up 13.79%.

Retail sentiment tracks the split: Meta's Reddit chatter recovered to a bullish 78 score by August 7 after cratering to 33 on earnings day, while Alphabet's composite sits at neutral-to-positive. The next test for Meta is whether its Q3 revenue guide of $61-64 billion holds and whether ad pricing keeps pace with impressions; for Alphabet, it is whether Cloud can sustain its growth rate long enough to justify the buyback pause.

24/7 Wall St. concludes that Alphabet's earnings quality is the stronger data point for now, though Meta's AI bet could close the gap if the youth litigation charges stabilize and CapEx starts producing measurable ad-yield gains.
