Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed six senior military commanders to lock down the country's wartime command structure. The move comes as reports point to his own injuries since the war began and as he hands a key security post to a longtime IRGC figure.

Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei has appointed six senior military commanders in a move to lock down the country's wartime command structure.

Mojtaba took over as Supreme Leader on March 9, 2026, after his father, Ali Khamenei, was killed in U.S.-Israeli airstrikes on February 28, 2026. Those strikes are widely regarded as the opening move in the fighting now called the 2026 Iran war.

As Supreme Leader, Mojtaba holds the constitutional power to name senior military officials, a position at the top of Iran's command hierarchy. But reports spanning April through August 2026 suggest he has sustained injuries during the conflict and has been handing day-to-day decisions to senior IRGC figures.

In early August 2026, Mojtaba named Mohsen Rezaei as his representative to the Supreme National Security Council. Rezaei, a veteran IRGC figure and longtime political operator, now holds one of the most consequential seats in Iran's national security apparatus.

The appointment follows earlier changes from June 2025, before Mojtaba took charge, when Iran replaced armed forces chief of staff Abdolrahim Mousavi and IRGC ground forces commander Mohammad Pakpour.
