Kuwait's army says it repelled missile and drone attacks from Iran on Thursday, a day after President Donald Trump said renewed Middle East fighting would not last "too long." Iran had already struck U.S. allies Jordan and Bahrain in retaliation for American strikes on Tuesday, while Reuters reports Trump aides are pushing to keep the conflict quiet before November's midterm elections.

Kuwait says it intercepted Iranian missiles and drones

Kuwait's army said on Thursday it was confronting hostile missile and drone attacks from Iran, advising residents to follow security and safety instructions. The military said any explosions heard in the country came from air defense systems intercepting hostile targets, not the strikes themselves.

Iranian state media outlet IRIB said the strikes targeted U.S. bases in Kuwait. The attack came a day after Trump described the American strikes against Iran on Tuesday as a very heavy attack and said the U.S. was prepared for further military operations at any time.

Trump says the fighting will not last "too long"

According to CNBC, Trump told reporters on Wednesday he did not expect the war to continue much longer, saying the hostilities would not last "too long". Iran had already retaliated after Tuesday's strikes by targeting U.S. regional allies Jordan and Bahrain.

Trump also said Wednesday that, while he is not on the midterm ballot, he plans to help the Republican Party, which he said supports preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. He added the effort is meant to help the Middle East, Israel and the United States.

Aides push to keep the conflict quiet before the midterms

Reuters reported that top Trump aides are pushing to keep the Iran war from escalating before November's midterm elections. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are reportedly trying to keep the conflict relatively quiet until the elections conclude, according to four people familiar with the discussions.

The push comes as the war grows increasingly unpopular at home. A University of Massachusetts Amherst poll of 1,000 respondents in August found more than two-thirds disapproved of Trump's handling of the war, with nearly as many disapproving of his handling of the job overall.
