Hunter Biden will launch a memecoin called LAPTOP on Coinbase's Base network on Sept. 9, with a fifth of its 1 billion token supply airdropped to wallets that lost money on Trump's TRUMP memecoin. Up to 30% of the supply is tied to a burn mechanism triggered by events including a Democratic win in 2028, and the announcement already spawned more than a dozen copycat tokens.
Hunter Biden, the son of former U.S. president Joe Biden, confirmed on Monday that a memecoin named LAPTOP launches on Sept. 9 on Coinbase's Base network. According to CoinDesk, he named the token after the computer he abandoned at a Delaware repair shop in 2019, whose contents were leaked ahead of the 2020 election. He posted the ticker and date to X alongside a clip of a Fox News segment about the laptop, and the post drew 250,900 views within an hour.
Airdrop targets holders sitting on TRUMP losses
LAPTOP's total supply is 1 billion tokens. Founders including Biden hold 30%, locked for six months and released over the following two years. Another 20% goes to two rounds of airdrops that include wallets underwater on TRUMP, Biden's Substack subscribers, and a mailing list run by video journalist Andrew Callaghan, according to the Journal's account of the tokenomics. A further 20% is earmarked for liquidity, exchange listings and legal costs.
Up to 30% could be burned — or donated
The remaining 30% is tied to 30 named events, including a Democratic win in the 2028 election, bitcoin setting a new all-time high, or LAPTOP's market value overtaking TRUMP's. According to the Journal's account, tokens tied to conditions that don't occur are donated to charity proportionally instead of being destroyed. Biden has not published his own tokenomics, and his X post named neither a contract address nor a launch venue.
Copycats appeared within a minute
The Wall Street Journal broke the news first, and Biden's post went up four minutes later. Within an hour, at least 14 copycat LAPTOP tokens appeared across four other networks, trading $6.9 million between them — none on Base, and none launching Sept. 9.
TRUMP, the memecoin issued in President Trump's name three days before his second inauguration, now trades 97% below its record. It last changed hands at $2.25, down 6.3% over 24 hours. Holders who bought near its January 2025 peak and never sold are the constituency LAPTOP's airdrop addresses.
