Grayscale's Ethereum Staking Mini ETF has staked 80.8% of its roughly 839,556 Ether and plans to convert rewards into cash for quarterly investor payouts. A July 2026 amendment filing signals the fund could push its staked share even higher, following a precedent set by Grayscale's larger Ethereum Trust earlier this year.

Grayscale's Ethereum Staking Mini ETF is staking the vast majority of its Ether holdings inside a US-regulated exchange-traded fund, then preparing to cut quarterly checks to investors from the rewards. As of early August 2026, the fund holds approximately 839,556 Ether, with 80.8% of that actively staked. Gross staking rewards sit at roughly 2.78%, netting out to 2.61% after fees.

A July 2026 amendment filing signals the fund could push its staked share even higher, potentially approaching nearly all of its holdings. As a result, the Mini ETF is setting a benchmark that rivals will need to match or explain why they chose not to.

How the plumbing works

The Mini ETF, which trades under the ticker ETH, launched on July 23, 2024, with a management fee of just 0.15%. Under amendments filed in July 2026, Grayscale plans to convert staking rewards into cash and distribute them to shareholders on a quarterly basis. The conversion-to-cash approach is designed to satisfy IRS guidelines, which treat staking rewards as ordinary income for US holders once received by the trust.

Staking Ether directly requires technical knowledge, capital lockup, and a tolerance for the operational risks of running validator infrastructure. The ETF wrapper abstracts all of that into a brokerage account line item.

The ETHE precedent

Grayscale's larger Grayscale Ethereum Trust, known by its ticker ETHE, made history on January 6, 2026, when it executed the first-ever US staking payout, distributing approximately $9.4 million in staking rewards to shareholders. That milestone proved the regulatory and tax framework could accommodate staking distributions inside a traditional fund wrapper, giving Grayscale real-world operational experience it could apply to the Mini ETF's more ambitious staking program.

Tax implications investors need to understand

When the trust receives staking rewards, those rewards are classified as ordinary income for US holders. That's a meaningful distinction from capital gains treatment, because ordinary income rates can run significantly higher depending on an investor's tax bracket.

Converting those rewards to cash for distribution could also trigger capital gains or losses, depending on the price movement between the time the rewards were received and the time they were sold. Investors therefore face a two-layer tax event: ordinary income on receipt, plus potential capital gains on conversion. The quarterly structure helps by creating regular, documentable taxable events rather than a continuous stream of micro-rewards that would be difficult to track.

A fee advantage on top of the yield

At 0.15%, the Mini ETF undercuts most equity ETFs, let alone crypto products that historically charged management fees north of 1%. The 2.61% net yield is essentially a bonus return layered on top of whatever price appreciation or depreciation Ether delivers.
