Germany's Ifo Business Climate Index rose to 88.8 in August, beating the 87.2 forecast and extending a sharp recovery in corporate sentiment. Both current conditions and expectations improved, with manufacturing leading gains even as order books stayed weak.
Germany's Ifo Business Climate Index climbed to 88.8 in August from a revised 86.7 in July, topping the 87.2 reading economists had forecast. The Current Situation gauge rose from 86.5 to 88.5, while Expectations climbed from 86.8 to 89.1.
According to Ifo President Clemens Fuest: "Despite the renewed rise in energy prices, the German economy is recovering." The Expectations sub-index also beat its 87.5 forecast, a sign firms grew more optimistic about the next six months rather than just the present.
Recovery broadens across sectors
Manufacturing posted the strongest rebound, with its balance rising from -9.6 to -4.2 as firms reported better current conditions and expected production to increase over the next three months, though order books remained weak. Services improved from -4.4 to -2.1, trade from -23.4 to -20.5, and construction from -20.5 to -16.5, with construction's gain driven by less pessimistic expectations even as current conditions softened slightly.
The broad-based movement across manufacturing, services, trade and construction points to a recovery that is no longer confined to one part of the economy. Weak orders and persistent pressure in areas such as transport and logistics, however, still argue against calling the recovery complete.
GDP growth adds to the picture
The confidence data followed news that Germany's gross domestic product expanded 0.3% in Q2 2026 compared with the previous quarter. That figure exceeded the prior 0.2% preliminary reading.
