European natural gas prices climbed above €80 per megawatt-hour on Wednesday for the first time in more than three years, with benchmark futures rising as much as 6.8% to €80.98. That is the highest level since January 2023.
The move comes as prices have more than doubled since the start of the war in the Middle East. Even so, current levels remain below the peaks seen during the earlier energy crisis.
