Several European defense companies have agreed to work together on a system against medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. Airbus, Thales, Safran, Destinus and MBDA signed a letter of intent to establish a consortium.

The consortium aims to develop an exo-atmospheric interceptor system. MBDA is itself a joint venture of Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo.

The companies plan to enter into a binding agreement within three months. Engineering work is expected to start in August, and the consortium plans to conduct a test in space next year.
