The European Union has banned the purchase, import and transfer of gold originating in Sudan, adding the country's gold trade to its sanctions list. Brussels says the trade helps finance a military conflict that has run for more than three years.

The European Union imposed new sanctions on Sudan on Monday that target the country's gold trade, which the bloc says is being used to finance the military conflict there.

The Council of the European Union set out the scope of the restrictions in a statement. The decision introduces a ban on the purchase, import or transfer of gold originating in Sudan. It also bans the sale, supply, transfer or export of mercury and cyanide to Sudan.

The sanctions land against a conflict between Sudan's army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces that began more than three years ago. The EU says that war has caused a vast humanitarian crisis. The measures add gold originating in Sudan to the bloc's sanctions list.
