ETHGas is developing a service that lets banks reserve Ethereum blockspace in advance. Validators that miss their commitments currently owe no compensation, and no bank has been identified using the service in production.

ETHGas is developing Institutional Blockspace, a service that would let banks and trading firms choose which validators process their Ethereum transactions, screen counterparties for sanctions compliance and reserve space in upcoming blocks. The transactions would still settle on Ethereum's public network.

The catch is that validators who fail to deliver on their commitments currently face no financial compensation requirement under the service. Founder Kevin Lepsoe told CoinDesk: "Currently, the compensation amount is set to 0, and we haven't had any major issues".

Why banks want certainty on timing

Knowing when a transaction will go through matters when banks move large sums. ETHGas wants to give them that certainty without pushing them onto private blockchains, by selling advance commitments to include transactions in Ethereum blocks.

Reserving blockspace could also let institutions schedule large transactions rather than compete for space when they submit an order. For validators, the service offers another way to earn revenue by selling that capacity ahead of time.

Lepsoe said banks' current alternative is to build another L1 or L2 where everyone is permissioned and liquidity is fragmented. He prefers to bring that capital onto Ethereum.

Validator availability limits the service

The service also faces a validator availability problem. Lepsoe said qualified validators represent about 5% of Ethereum's network, with a target of 20% to 30% or more by year-end.

An October report by Delphi Digital models the effect. At 5% coverage, the expected wait for an eligible validator to propose a block is roughly four minutes, with a 23% chance of one becoming available within a minute. At 30% coverage, the average wait falls to about 40 seconds.

Lepsoe called the table a model, not live data. Delphi's consulting arm produced the report under a paid agreement with ETHGas, and the report describes about $800 million in blockspace commitments.

Neither Lepsoe nor Delphi's report identified a bank currently using Institutional Blockspace in production.
