The Ethereum Economic Zone completed its first atomic transaction linking Ethereum's mainnet with a layer-2 network, moving 0.001 ETH across both layers in one all-or-nothing operation. The test pushes forward a framework meant to connect fragmented rollups without bridges, with Gnosis Chain positioned as one of the first large-scale tests, targeting genesis around December 2026 or January 2027.
On Tuesday, EEZ contributor Eduardo Antuña Díez shared a transaction he called the first atomic cross-chain transaction between Ethereum's mainnet and a layer-2 network. The transaction's logs record a cross-chain call carrying 0.001 ETH and a state update for a rollup. In an atomic transaction, linked actions across networks either all succeed or are all reversed if any part fails.
EEZ links Ethereum mainnet and a rollup in one transaction
The Ethereum Economic Zone is designed to let a smart contract on a connected rollup call a contract on Ethereum mainnet, receive the result, and continue using it within the same transaction. Under the hood, the framework relies on a proxy-and-bundle mechanism, submitting linked operations through a function called postAndVerifyBatch on an L1 smart contract so they land together in a single Ethereum block.
In March, developers behind EEZ said the framework was designed to let rollups interact with each other and Ethereum mainnet within a single transaction, without relying on bridges. Gnosis co-founder Friederike Ernst has said the lack of synchronous composability forces protocols to maintain separate deployments across L2s, fragmenting liquidity into multiple markets.
Jakub Gregus, co-founder of decentralized finance protocol Hydration, called the demonstration "one of the most important milestones" in crypto, saying the technology could directly benefit Ethereum.
Gnosis Chain eyes the first major EEZ rollup
Gnosis and Zisk launched EEZ in March with funding from the Ethereum Foundation, and Gnosis Chain is positioned to provide one of the first large-scale tests of the framework. GnosisDAO approved GIP-153 in August, backing a plan to turn Gnosis Chain from a standalone layer-1 into an EEZ rollup that settles on Ethereum, with the vote receiving 123,158 GNO in support against 115 opposed and 151 abstentions.
The governance proposal targets genesis for the new setup around December 2026 or January 2027, after which Ethereum would eventually replace Gnosis Chain's independent validator system as the settlement layer. The full EEZ specification, including bidirectional composability and real-time zero-knowledge proving, is expected to develop through 2027.
The latest mainnet test used only 0.001 ETH, so it should be viewed as a technical demonstration rather than evidence the system is ready for large-scale financial activity.
