The European Central Bank has invited euro-area merchants to join a 12-month pilot testing beta digital euro payments starting in the second half of 2027. Selected businesses will trial checkout journeys and payment processing alongside payment providers and national central banks.
The ECB opened its call for merchants on Sept. 15, inviting online and mobile-commerce businesses across the euro area to test a beta version of the proposed central bank digital currency. Selected merchants will run the trial inside controlled online and mobile environments rather than live, legal-tender transactions.
Pilot to run for 12 months from 2027
That beta version will closely mirror the technical and functional design proposed for the digital euro, but it carries no legal tender status and works only within the pilot. Participating businesses will test payment functionality, operational processes and customer experiences, including checkout journeys and integration requirements, while feeding results back to the Eurosystem.
The trial will run for 12 months, beginning in the second half of 2027, and will involve the ECB together with the 19 euro-area national central banks. Merchants will work alongside the payment service providers the ECB selected in July, adding a commercial layer on top of that existing technical infrastructure.
Applications close in late October
Participation is voluntary and unpaid. Selected merchants must sign a participation agreement with the ECB and set up or adjust arrangements with an acquiring pilot payment service provider. The ECB will assess applications on market reach, operational readiness and suitability for the pilot, and will hold an information session on October 6 to walk businesses through the process.
The application deadline falls at 17:00 CET on October 27, 2026. Merchant feedback on payment journeys and integration could shape future technical specifications and user-focused design choices, since broad merchant acceptance would determine how easily consumers could use the currency day to day.
Issuance still depends on EU legislation
However, the pilot does not guarantee a digital euro launch. The ECB has stressed that issuance depends on the adoption of relevant EU legislation and a separate decision by its Governing Council. If those conditions are met, the institution is preparing for possible issuance around 2029.
The merchant trial gives the Eurosystem practical evidence from real checkout environments before any such decision is made.
