Dow Jones Industrial Average futures edged higher Wednesday morning after a private payrolls report undershot forecasts, while broader index futures traded mixed. Inside the blue-chip index, Apple and Nvidia gained while Chevron and Microsoft slipped, and artificial intelligence stock Credo Technology tumbled in premarket trading despite beating earnings estimates.
Dow futures climbed 0.2% ahead of Wednesday's open, even as S&P 500 futures inched higher. Nasdaq-100 futures fell 0.2% in the same early trading.
Private payrolls miss forecasts
Ahead of the open, ADP reported that private payrolls rose by 38,000 in August, short of estimates for a 48,000 gain and the slowest pace of hiring since January. ADP chief economist Dr. Nela Richardson said in the release: "Pay can tell us a lot about today's choppy hiring."
Dow components split before the bell
Within the Dow industrials, Apple and Nvidia notched modest premarket gains, with Apple extending Tuesday's 2.6% rally. Chevron and Microsoft, however, drifted lower in early action; Chevron had broken out past a 208.98 cup-with-handle entry the prior session.
Credo drops on margin worries despite earnings beat
Credo Technology shares plunged 11% in premarket trading even after posting a 131% jump in earnings per share. The company posted fiscal first-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.20 a share on sales of $479 million, topping Wall Street's call for $1.17 a share on $473.3 million. Investors instead focused on gross margin slipping to 68% from 68.3%.
Elsewhere in earnings, Dell stock rallied more than 8%. MongoDB shares plummeted nearly 13% the same morning. Ollie's Bargain Outlet surged nearly 4%. Palo Alto Networks slipped almost 2% in premarket trading. Broadcom, Five Below, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, NetApp and Snowflake are also due to report results later Wednesday.
