Long-dormant bitcoin wallets moved 5,419.45 BTC worth $457.23 million in September, a cooldown from August's record but still well above July's pace. Wallets opened in 2016 led the activity, and more than half of last month's transfers involved coins untouched for twelve to sixteen years.

Long-dormant bitcoin kept stirring in September, as owners of coins untouched for over a decade sent 5,419.45 BTC worth $457.23 million to new addresses. The pace cooled from August, yet it held comfortably above July's tally.

Sleeping Bitcoin Stirs Across 94 Transfers

Data from btcparser.com shows wallets created between 2010 and 2017 moved roughly 5,401.841 BTC across 94 distinct transfers during the month. The youngest address involved was about nine years and two months old, while the two oldest dated back to March 2, 2010, making them sixteen years and seven months old.

September's movements fell short of August's 6,427.59 BTC, but the mix of wallets shifted. Coins from 2014 made up 51.13% of the BTC moved in August. In September, that vintage accounted for only 7.48% of the total.

2016 Wallets Lead the Reawakening

Wallets opened in 2016 moved the most, shifting 1,556.53 BTC across 13 transactions. Wallets from 2013 followed, dispersing roughly 888.91 BTC through 26 separate transfers. Meanwhile, 2010-era wallets holding some of bitcoin's earliest block rewards sent 600 BTC across 14 transfers.

Decade-Old Coins Keep Moving

The average spend came to 57.65 BTC, though the most typical transfer was closer to 25 BTC, as a handful of large spends pulled the mean upward. Sept. 5 was the busiest day for transfer count, with around 24 transactions. The next day saw the most bitcoin spent at 1,620.39 BTC. Roughly 57 of last month's 93 sleeping bitcoin transfers involved coins between twelve and sixteen years old, moving for the first time since their wallets were created.

These patterned awakenings of decade-old wallets resemble deliberate consolidation by a small set of sophisticated holders rather than random chance, including early miners reclaiming old rewards. The orderly lot sizes and clustered creation dates suggest some dormant supply may be more organized and responsive than narratives of permanently lost bitcoin imply.
