DeFi's total value locked jumped 9.15% in 24 hours to $83.216 billion, while decentralized exchange volume broke above $10 billion for the first time since the first week of June. Hyperliquid captured roughly 45% of derivatives trading as capital returned to onchain markets.
Total value locked across DeFi protocols reached $83.216 billion at about 10:30 a.m. EDT on Aug. 20, according to Defillama data, sharply higher from the previous day. Spot decentralized exchange volume climbed to $10.886 billion. Decentralized perpetual futures platforms processed $36.72 billion. The stablecoin market held at $301.502 billion, well below its 2026 highs.
DEX Volume Breaks Above $10 Billion
Aug. 20 marked the first daily break above $10 billion since the first week of June. Trading had gone quiet through much of the summer as prices chopped sideways, speculative appetite dried up, and liquidity thinned across smaller tokens.
Uniswap remained the largest venue by volume, processing roughly $3.1 billion to $3.4 billion across its deployments in recent 24-hour readings. Pancakeswap followed near $1.2 billion, while Pump, Aerodrome, BisonFi and Orca helped push the broader market higher. Solana led spot DEX activity across the 24-hour, seven-day and 30-day windows, ahead of BNB Smart Chain, Ethereum and Base.
Capital Returns Alongside a Wider Rally
The rebound coincided with a broader cryptocurrency rally. Bitcoin traded between $71,500 and $72,000 on Aug. 20, while ether and other DeFi-centric tokens posted larger percentage gains, giving traders the volatility that fuels momentum trades, arbitrage and leveraged bets.
DeFi's TVL still sits well below its roughly $180 billion peak from the 2021 mania. The sector was crushed in 2022, spent years clawing back, tested higher ground around 2025, and rolled over again in 2026 before this rebound.
Hyperliquid Dominates Derivatives
Hyperliquid processed $15.205 billion in perpetual futures volume over the last 24 hours, $41.445 billion over seven days and $184.906 billion over 30 days. Its cumulative perpetual volume has reached $5.092 trillion, and open interest hovered near $11.94 billion. The platform often controls roughly 45% of total decentralized perpetual futures volume.
Hyperliquid's HYPE token climbed into the low-to-mid $70 range as trading intensified.
One explosive trading day does not make a lasting trend, and DeFi volume can evaporate quickly once volatility fades. Traders will watch whether DEX volume holds near or above $10 billion and TVL keeps climbing.
