Germany's DAX and Spain's Ibex closed at fresh record highs while France, the UK and Italy slipped, as European traders weighed optimism over U.S.-Iran talks against a mixed session on Wall Street. The Russell 2000 outperformed the other major U.S. indices, while the Nasdaq lagged.
Germany's DAX and Spain's Ibex closed at record highs on an otherwise mixed day for European equities, extending a recent run of record-setting performances across the region.
DAX and Ibex close at record highs
The DAX rose 0.26% to close at 26,391.43, a record close. The Ibex added 0.20% to finish at 20,213.61, also a record. France's CAC 40 slipped 0.13% to 8,714.95. The UK's FTSE 100 fell 0.17% to 10,844.20. Italy's FTSE MIB edged up 0.08% to 53,706.20.
Middle East optimism underpins the move
European equities have been pushing into record territory recently amid strong corporate earnings and optimism around U.S.-Iran negotiations. Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said today that the U.S. and Iran are close to "some sort of an arrangement," according to Investinglive, adding that recent signals point toward a peace agreement. Qatar has also indicated that talks over the Strait of Hormuz have reached an advanced stage, though shipping disruptions and disagreements over an agreement's terms keep uncertainty elevated.
US indices trade mixed
As European traders headed home, the major U.S. indices were also trading mixed, with the Russell 2000 outperforming and the Nasdaq the weakest. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.06% to 53,951.38. The S&P 500 fell 0.08% to 7,746.54. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 0.33% to 26,517.46. The Russell 2000 gained 0.44% to 3,030.69.
