US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick says Anthropic has aligned its security posture with the Trump administration, easing a months-long rift ahead of the AI developer's potential IPO. The thaw follows a brief export restriction in June and comes after a federal judge last week ordered the government to lift separate Pentagon procurement curbs.

US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick signaled a resolution to months of regulatory friction with Anthropic PBC, telling Bloomberg Television that the AI developer has aligned its security stance with the administration. He made the remarks on the sidelines of a Group of 20 technology summit in North Carolina, saying executive intervention helped bridge the policy differences.

Export curbs reversed after safeguard changes

The détente follows a period of heightened scrutiny in June, when the Commerce Department temporarily restricted exports of Anthropic's flagship Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models over national security concerns. Those restrictions were rescinded two weeks later, after Anthropic implemented revised safeguard protocols that satisfied federal oversight standards.

Anthropic, meanwhile, lays early groundwork for an initial public offering that market observers anticipate could rival or exceed SpaceX's record-setting public debut. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown appeared alongside Lutnick at the G20 summit and publicly endorsed administration efforts to accelerate domestic data center construction and power infrastructure.

Pentagon rift remains unresolved

It remains unclear whether the alignment with Commerce signals a broader reconciliation across the federal government, particularly at the Department of Defense. The Pentagon had previously designated Anthropic a supply-chain risk and halted military deployment of its technologies, following a rift over the startup's insistence on mandatory safety guardrails.

Anthropic notched a legal win last week when a federal judge in San Francisco ruled in its favor, ordering the government to lift the military procurement restrictions.
