Cloudflare began rolling out programmable stablecoin wallets that let AI agents pay for APIs, data and online content, opening handle reservations on Tuesday. Funding and agent spending controls arrive later, and owners will be able to cap purchases by allowance, merchant and transaction size.
Cloudflare started rolling out programmable wallets that let AI agents pay for APIs, data and online content using stablecoins, the company said Tuesday. Users can now claim a unique Cloudflare Wallet handle tied to their account, while funding the wallet and authorizing agents to spend from it arrive soon.
Two wallets, one owner
The company split the product into an Account Wallet, which lets individuals and organizations fund it with stablecoins and control spending, and a Virtual Wallet, which operates through API keys so agents can make purchases on their owner's behalf. Owners can also set allowances, approved-merchant lists and maximum transaction sizes; those controls could let an agent test several low-cost APIs and pick the best one without seeking repeated human approval.
Matthew Prince, Cloudflare's co-founder and CEO, said in the announcement: "When an agent shows up at your door, you need to know who sent it." Account owners can also reserve a human-readable cloudflare.pay handle starting Tuesday, so an agent can identify who runs it to a merchant.
A payment network built on x402
The wallets will support micropayments through x402, a protocol Coinbase built that lets a website return payment instructions when an agent requests access, so the agent can pay and get in without a conventional account or subscription. That protocol has settled 160.6 million transactions worth $41.2 million across seven chains, according to tracker Agent Economy — an average of about 26 cents per transaction, though the tracker says its totals include tests and repeated service calls.
Building on partnerships already in place
Tuesday's rollout builds on Cloudflare and Coinbase's launch of the x402 Foundation in September 2025 to promote standards for machine-to-machine payments. Cloudflare has also partnered with Visa, Mastercard and American Express on standards that help merchants identify trusted AI agents. The rollout also follows Cloudflare's Monetization Gateway, which lets sites charge agents per request in stablecoins and was announced in July.
Handle reservations are the only piece live today — funding and Virtual Wallet issuance follow in the coming months, according to Cloudflare's press release. Once live, the wallets would give agents a way to independently purchase AI inference, data, content and tools within limits their owners set.
