China sanctioned at least six US entities and imposed new case-by-case review on drone exports to the US on August 5, warning Washington that further tech restrictions would draw additional retaliation. The move lands weeks before Xi Jinping's September 24 visit to the US, where technology and AI top the agenda with President Donald Trump.

China sanctioned at least six US entities and imposed case-by-case government review on drone exports to the US on August 5, while warning Washington that additional tech restrictions would be met with further retaliation. The move comes weeks before Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit the US on September 24 for talks with President Donald Trump, where technology, particularly AI, sits at the top of the agenda.

What Beijing targeted

China's Ministry of Commerce named Applied DNA Sciences and Compliance Testing LLC among the sanctioned entities. Drone exports to the US now require case-by-case government review, effective immediately, covering unmanned aerial vehicles and their key components.

The moves respond to recent US actions: the FCC imposed import bans on Chinese drones. Additional Chinese companies were also listed under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. The episode follows Trump's visit to Beijing in May. It extends a tech rivalry that has intensified since 2018, when Washington first deployed export controls aimed at slowing China's progress in semiconductors and artificial intelligence.

Why the dispute reaches beyond drones

Dual-use technology controls have a way of expanding their scope over time, and what starts with drones could eventually touch computing hardware and the specialized chips that underpin AI development. China remains a major producer of rare earth minerals critical to semiconductor manufacturing, and any further deterioration in relations raises the specter of rare earth export restrictions that would cascade through chip production and could affect the hardware supply chain for Bitcoin mining equipment.

An asymmetric bet ahead of September 24

China's warning of further countermeasures creates an asymmetric risk profile for the Xi-Trump meeting: if talks go well, relief rallies across risk assets are likely, but if they deteriorate, the sanctions playbook Beijing just demonstrated could expand significantly. The semiconductor space is the signal to watch, since the US has used chip export controls as its primary weapon in the rivalry, and any indication Washington plans to tighten restrictions further before the summit could trigger pre-emptive Chinese retaliation.
