Cardano has gained native support in the official x402 codebase, the open internet payments protocol originally built by Coinbase. The integration, contributed by Cardano Foundation engineers, lets developers and AI agents settle payments on Cardano through the same standardized tooling used by other supported networks.

Cardano has landed native support in the official x402 codebase, bringing the network directly into the open payment protocol's reference tooling. Cardano Foundation engineers contributed the implementation.

What the integration covers

The addition includes client, server, and facilitator components as well as working examples, with support spanning Cardano mainnet, preprod, and preview. Developers building x402 applications no longer need to start from an independent Cardano implementation, since the native components give them a standardized starting point.

x402 uses HTTP's long-dormant "402 Payment Required" status code to let applications request and make payments directly over the internet. In practice, a service can tell another application or an AI agent that access costs a set amount, which matters for autonomous agents that pay for APIs, data, or computing resources on their own.

From third-party workaround to official support

Cardano-based x402 payments were already possible through third-party projects such as Masumi, but the new implementation has now been folded into the official x402 codebase. This lowers the barrier for developers who want to use Cardano as a settlement network and makes it easier to include Cardano alongside other supported networks in multi-chain applications.

Because x402 is designed to be network- and currency-agnostic, applications can support several payment networks while keeping a common HTTP-based payment flow. The integration could also expand the number of applications capable of accepting payments settled on Cardano.

x402 keeps adding backers

The move comes as x402 continues to pick up support from major payments and crypto companies. In July, the x402 Foundation launched with backing from dozens of organizations, including Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Coinbase, Google, Mastercard, Ripple, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe and Visa.
