Bitcoin's whitepaper turned 18 on Oct. 31, days after Binance reported a $6.3 billion theft. The anniversary revives Satoshi Nakamoto's proposal for payments without trusted intermediaries, while the breach keeps exchange custody in focus.

Bitcoin's whitepaper turned 18 on Oct. 31, bringing fresh attention to Satoshi Nakamoto's proposal for payments without trusted intermediaries. The anniversary arrives days after Binance reported a $6.3 billion theft.

Satoshi posted the announcement at 2:10 p.m. EDT on Oct. 31, 2008, linking to the paper titled "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System." Anniversary posts have since returned to that opening promise.

The whitepaper proposed a shared payment history

Across nine pages, the whitepaper addressed a practical problem: a recipient needed a way to establish that the sender had not already spent the same funds elsewhere, without asking a central company to check every payment.

Satoshi proposed publicly broadcasting transactions and using proof-of-work to establish their order. Participants would accept valid transactions and build on the chain with the greatest accumulated work, so changing an older payment would require repeating the work securing it.

The paper appeared during a financial crisis. According to the Federal Reserve's history, Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy on Sept. 15, 2008, and the New York Fed provided support to insurer AIG the following day.

Binance's breach puts exchange custody in focus

Binance estimated that its Oct. 29 wallet breach affected $6.3 billion in assets. The exchange pledged to cover losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users and company resources.

In its Oct. 30 update, Binance said it had set aside more than $6.34 billion, including over $5 billion already held in corresponding token assets. It described unauthorized withdrawals from its hot wallet and said investigators had found no evidence that wallet private keys were compromised.

Custody concerns predated the breach. In an Oct. 22 letter, Casa chief security officer Jameson Lopp defended Bitcoin self-custody, arguing that moving into ETFs or managed custody left investors dependent on institutions safeguarding their holdings. Casa sells assisted self-custody services.

US guidance explains who controls the keys

The SEC's investor education office described the responsibilities of each custody arrangement in a December 2025 bulletin. With self-custody, investors manage their own private keys, and losing keys or suffering a wallet compromise can permanently prevent access to their assets.

Third-party custody places control of the keys with an exchange or another provider. The bulletin warns that customers may lose access if that provider is hacked, closes, or enters bankruptcy.

The bulletin also asks investors whether custodians carry insurance, combine customer holdings, lend deposited assets, or subcontract storage.
