Bitcoin has broken below its 20- and 50-period moving averages on the 5-hour chart, opening a path toward $81,194 support. At the same time, the Coinbase premium gap has stayed negative for more than 77 straight days, a reading analysts link to persistent US selling pressure.
Bitcoin traded at $83,440 on the 5-hour chart, still above its 200-SMA at $80,976, but short-term momentum has turned decisively bearish. The asset has lost both its 20-SMA at $85,078 and its 50-SMA at $84,560, and the MACD has swung into a bearish crossover.
Momentum breaks down below the cloud
Price has also slipped below the Ichimoku cloud at $84,852 to $84,864, a loss of structural support that often triggers algorithmic and trend-following selling. Former support has turned into fresh resistance. Real-time data put the pair at $83,658, down 2.39% on the session.
Bearish setup targets $81,194
The breakdown playbook lists an aggressive entry at $83,413, with a conservative entry at $84,560 on a retest of the 50-SMA. A stop at $85,811 frames the trade, with downside targets at $82,650, $81,194 and $80,976, carrying risk-to-reward ratios of 1.52, 2.69 and 2.86.
A reclaim of $85,100 or higher would invalidate the bearish thesis, while the $82,650-to-$84,500 zone is flagged as a chop range prone to whipsaws and a possible bear trap.
Coinbase premium gap stays negative
A separate metric points the same way. The Coinbase premium gap, which measures the price difference between Bitcoin on Coinbase and global venues such as Binance, has fallen to -$64, a reading Crypto Briefing says signals strong selling pressure from US investors. The negative streak has now run more than 77 consecutive days, the longest such stretch on record.
Analysts at CryptoQuant and 10x Research read the prolonged negative trend as a sign of either US institutions liquidating Bitcoin positions or simply buying less of it, a reading set against a year of mixed spot ETF flow data. The current reading is still short of the metric's historical low: the gap fell into the -$150 to -$170 range in late 2025 and early 2026, with a recent low near -$167.8.
