US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Sunday at JPMorgan Chase's Manhattan headquarters to discuss AI security, trade and other economic issues. The sit-down comes days before President Donald Trump hosts Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House.
Bessent and He Lifeng will meet Sunday at 10:30 a.m. ET (1430 GMT) at JPMorgan Chase headquarters in New York, according to a person familiar with the planning. The agenda covers AI security, trade and other economic issues between the two countries.
The Manhattan meeting lands just before Trump hosts Xi at the White House on Thursday and Friday. JPMorgan itself is not involved in the talks; the bank agreed only to provide its headquarters building as a venue amid heightened security in Manhattan ahead of the United Nations General Assembly starting next week, the person said.
Dimon's role in the diplomatic backdrop
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon is tied to the broader diplomatic backdrop even though the bank is not involved in Sunday's meeting. Bessent had invited Dimon to a G20 finance leaders meeting hosted by the US Treasury in Asheville, North Carolina, where Dimon spoke about private sector growth prospects.
Dimon is also one of the American CEOs invited to next week's state dinner for Xi at the White House, according to US officials. However, he did not join the delegation of executives that accompanied Trump to Beijing in May for the president's last meeting with Xi.
